The Senior Vice President, Finance will help Teach For America become the highest impact non-profit and achieve One Day by ensuring TFA has the financial resources, reputation, and acumen we need to execute on our 10-year Strategic Direction and beyond. Teach For America has set ambitious goals for 2030, which will require innovation layered on top of sound financial practices. As the SVP, Finance, you will represent the Finance team within the Executive Leadership Team, which is comprised of leaders from across the organization who work together to ensure its success.

The SVP reports to the Executive Vice President, Talent & Operations, and Chief Financial Officer.


In this role, you will:

  • Lead the finance function, the team that drives strategies, activities, and time applications related to TFA's financial planning, analysis, accounting, and reporting while training staff members across the organization to fulfill their responsibilities in maintaining our financial health
  • Represent finance and build relationships across the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), the executive body charged with shaping and stewarding TFA's direction, effectiveness, and impact
  • Make connections and powerful partnerships with our Development team and fundraising professionals and across the Talent and Operations portfolio, the group that drives cross-functional operational excellence in domains that deliver value at the enterprise, team leader, and staff experience altitudes
  • Champion staff stewardship of organizational resources, serving as a voice to prioritize this stewardship across the org and help staff understand the critical importance of stewardship mindsets, behaviors, and habits in our One Day aspirations
  • Inspire Innovation at all levels to run dynamic and strategic processes that allow us to allocate the greatest possible share of our resources to impact and value creation


Prior Experience

  • Teach For America staff experience preferred but not required
  • Success leading and advancing cross-functional work through a system
  • Success leading a large team to achieve strong results with a positive culture
  • Track record of developing and executing on complex, enterprise-level strategy

Work Demands

  • Travel required approximately once per month
  • Some evening and weekend work may be required in peak season

A strong SVP, Finance candidate will demonstrate the following traits:

  • Strategist: Develop strategic clarity around resourcing needed for TFA's work and what capabilities, activities, and performance is therefore needed from the Finance team. Consistently and rigorously assess progress and refine strategy by engaging in analysis and structured problem solving with your team. You will demonstrate a complex understanding of the root issues facing students, teachers, peers, and communities while actively allocating resources and helping set organizational policies, systems, and practices to reduce and eliminate gaps.
  • Strong operator: Demonstrate bias toward action that activates- rather than bulldozes- team members through the layers of the team to get results. Able to design and support systematic and dynamic ways of prioritizing, initiating, executing, and evaluating improvement projects grounded in qualitative and quantitative data, while continuing to ensure "business as usual" continues effectively.
  • People Leader: Manage and lead a multi-layered, diverse team to ambitious, clear outcomes. Ensure team processes and activities, particularly people's processes and activities, are anchored in our Foundations and Commitment to DEI. Coach and provide performance and career support to seasoned and senior staffers on the Finance team. You will lead and act with the knowledge that your own experience and the experience of others are shaped by personal social identities, historic and systemic issues, and their impact.
  • Partnership Creator: Thoughtfully cultivate partnerships across the org to advance the work, prioritizing key relationships with Development, Regional Operations, and Risk and Compliance, while continuing to focus on collaboration with Org-Wide Learning & Strategy, Human Assets, and Information Technology. You will build authentic relationships and partnerships across lines of difference while demonstrating the ability to adapt and work collaboratively with all people.
  • Storyteller: In order to bring to life complex or technical content, a leading candidate will demonstrate a strong internal public presence, an ability to simply and compellingly set collective direction through language, and be adept at leveraging the right avenues for different moments and audiences (i.e. videos, Zoom calls, email, or Slack communication channels, etc).
  • Technical Expert: Bring technical expertise and experience (e.g. financial analysis, accounting principles, public and/or private grants) to bear to ensure TFA has the right resources and acumen for this next phase as an org.

Stand-out candidates will demonstrate exceptional strength as a strategist, strong operator, and people leader.

The Finance team ensures that Teach For America has the financial resources and reputation to get to our organizational vision of 'One Day'. The team oversees all financial matters, including procurement, accounting and disbursement operations, planning and analysis, grants and contracts administration, and payroll processes. The SVP, Finance will lead the entire function and work closely with the Finance Leadership Team to promote cross-team collaboration and learning. In addition, they will collaborate with the Executive Vice President of Talent & Operations and Chief Financial Officer to ensure Teach For America maintains its strong financial reputation with external partners (the National Board, funders, banks, auditors, etc.)

The SVP, Finance will directly manage the heads of the Finance sub-teams. The SVP will be supported in this work by a Strategy, Talent, and Operations team that serves as the backbone for achieving the Finance team's vision and priorities.
