RN Supervisor

The RN Supervisor (2nd shift, 32 hours) under the direction of the Director of Clinical Services is responsible for overseeing all resident care and administrative duties during assigned shift. This includes maintaining a therapeutic environment by facilitating productive communication.

  • Medication Administration: Ensures medications are given by the charge nurse within one hour of assigned time; accurately signs MAR immediately before or after administering scheduled medications, PRN medications and documents effectiveness; Monitors indicated parameters and side effects for all administered medications
  • Provides for physical comfort and safe environment. This includes consistently monitoring chair and bed alarms. Follows all safety and security policies and procedures; performs all tasks to assure resident and personal safety and the protection of co-workers and facility property.
  • Documentation: Accurately documents resident assessment and interventions of change in condition, including notification of physician, nursing administration and family; Records accurate pertinent data on 24-hour report; Consistently documents vital sign
  • Thoroughly completes accident and incident reports, including notification section, in a timely manner, and fall assessment when needed.
  • Ensures that treatments are accurately performed by Charge Nurse as prescribed by physicians.
  • Notifies Director of Nursing of change or concern in resident's condition at the time condition is assessed. Follows DNS directives related to issue.
  • Accurately completes treatment administration record.
  • Assesses and documents observations and treatment effectiveness according to skin integrity protocol.
  • Notifies physician and APRN of treatment/medication effectiveness when necessary.
  • Assures resident rooms are in a neat, orderly fashion while maintaining the resident's right to privacy, i.e., neat closets, labeled personal items. Assures cleanliness of utility rooms, kitchens, staff rooms, shower rooms, linen rooms and other work areas.
  • Promptly and courteously answers residents' call bells and other requests for assistance.
  • Assures that residents are neatly attired and presented in a dignified manner (i.e., bibs removed after meals, clothes clean and in good repair).
  • Ensures admission and discharge paperwork is accurately completed including: reviews medications, indicators, side effects, and scheduling prior to discharge; completes discharge summary, prescription record prior to discharge; and teach techniques/knowledge needed.
  • Accurately transcribes medical orders, including renewal and expiration dates.
  • Participates in completing new monthly Kardex reviews.
  • Initiates, implements and evaluates care plans on an ongoing basis.
  • Assures CNA provides appropriate plan of care.
  • Effectively communicates resident status at shift report.
  • Effectively communicates individualized care plan to family/responsible parties as needed.
  • Follows infection control, bloodborne pathogens and hazardous materials policies and procedures.
  • Ensures monthly progress notes and quarterly assessments are completed accurately and timely by the charge nurse.
  • Notifies nursing administrative staff, physician, and family of resident change in status.
  • Notifies nursing administrative staff of potential safety issues.
  • Notifies nursing administrative staff of potential staffing concerns.
  • Coordinates staff appropriate to ensure adequate staffing to meet resident needs.
  • Satisfactorily completes all competencies.
  • Utilization of the electronic medical records system.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of principles of nursing. Dementia care experience preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of geriatric nursing care and assessment skills.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of supervisory principles and practices. Two years supervisory experience, in the field of geriatrics preferable. General teaching skills.
  • State of Connecticut Licensed Registered Nurse, B.S.N. preferred.
  • Five years clinical experience with emphasis in geriatric practice.
  • Thorough knowledge of State and Federal regulated standards of practice.
  • Thorough knowledge of Duncaster policies, procedures, and philosophy of operation.
  • Ability to handle a wide variety of tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to relate well to personnel from all departments and deal effectively with visitors and residents in a courteous and tactful manner.
  • Excellent communication skills and team-oriented approach.
