Mechanical Assembler I

A Mechanical Assembler I (MA I) is the first position any new SP employee who accepts a job with SP will start with. This position will understand how to read blueprints, braze and will be called upon from time to time to assist with shipping, passivation and other duties as required. A person can remain a MA I for up to four years before moving up to Mechanical Assembler II and is and considered a semi-skilled laborer. If an Assembler takes it upon themselves, or out of necessity, to learn how to assemble larger Pilot units such as General Purpose Freeze Dryers (GPFDs), Virtual units and Genesis units, efficiently, then they can move up to Mechanical Assembler II.

General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare and assemble various segments of mechanical systems and top-level assemblies as well as lower-level components and sub-assemblies under the direction of the immediate supervisor.
  • Interpret and use drawings, process procedures and other written documentation to complete preparation and assembly of components. Meet documented specification requirements and quality standards in a cost effective and timely manner.
  • Fabricate simpler components using various items including hand tools, power tools, fixtures, jigs, drills, taps, saws and other tools and tooling. Use various types of material handling equipment including hand trucks, carts, forklifts, scissor lifts, cranes, etc. where required and available.
  • Form, prepare and align copper, brass and plastic piping along with associated bracketing and hardware. Braze, solder and bond piping as may be required. Mount various assemblies and components.
  • Perform required metal treatment processes per documented procedures and work instructions; processes include polishing, painting, and passivation.
  • Maintain a neat, clean and organized work area. Suggest changes for improved operations and cost savings.
  • Complete paperwork accurately and in a timely manner as required in the manufacturing process such as: Time Sheets, Assembly Routers, Non-conformance Records and Test Records. This also included clocking in daily.
  • Follow all safety policies, precautions, recommendations and procedures as may be applicable.
  • Assist other production departments or operations areas based on workloads and needs. Assist in other non-production areas as may be required by supervision and management.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following, other duties maybe assigned

  • A Mechanical Assembler I will range from a novice assemblers to those that can fully assembly any of the research machines: Freezemobiles, Bench Tops and Advantage units or any units of a similar complexity.

  • Voluntarily complete (1) Kaizen event during the fiscal year.
  • Achieve an on time delivery of 75% or higher. On time Delivery is meeting the date set forth by the planner and production supervisor. Exceptions for faulty parts and vendor delays are taken into consideration.
  • Have less than 25 First Pass Yields in a calendar year. First Pass yields defined as any items that requires an assembler to fix a problem once it is pushed into Final test. IE dirty machine, poor workmanship,
  • Mechanical Assembler One's will work on routine assignments and under direct supervision. Work will be regularly checked for completeness. Learn to work on the shop tools and how to safely use the basic shop materials.
  • Determines and follows methods and sequences of operations in performing wiring, component, installation, brazing and hand soldering on assembly units.
  • Assist other production departments or operations areas based on workloads and needs. Assist in other non-production areas as may be required by supervision and management.
  • Makes minor setups of equipment in assigned area and performs basic assembly. Keep logs or other necessary records. Learn and practice safe operation of basic tools and materials.
  • Ability to read, write and understand basic written and verbal instructions in English and able to do simple arithmetic.
  • Minimum of zero to one year of related experience.

The work environment characteristics described here are typical of those an employee might encounter while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • The shop contains mobile equipment, machinery, and high voltages.
  • The shop noise level is variable and may require hearing protection in some areas.
  • The shop is heated when required but many areas are not air conditioned.
  • Some shop processes use high voltage arcs or concentrated magnetic fields.
  • The shop contains open flames and caustic chemicals.
